Gothmas: One Moody Design for Your Table, Floor, and Couch

Gothmas table runner in a styled table setting, moody botanical quilling-look print on deep plum
Featured design: Gothmas: One Moody Design for Your Table, Floor, and Couch. See the linked Etsy listing for current product details and availability.

Last November I got into an actual argument about whether Halloween had to come down before Christmas could go up.

I lost. Everything went into bins. The pumpkins went into one bin, the ornaments went into another, and for about six weeks the house sat in that bare, beige no-man’s-land between the two holidays where nobody has a single thing on the table. I hated those six weeks. This year I refused to repeat them, and that’s how this whole collection happened.

The design is one moody botanical panorama printed with the look and feel of paper quilling: floral medallions built from rolled-paper-style spirals, crescent moons, small stars, all of it sitting on deep plum. It comes in green, red, and blue medallion colorways. It is a flat print, which is the part I want to be straight about up front. You get the craft, the detail, the hours of quilling in the look of it, without one fragile strip of actual paper to bend, dust, or crush under a serving dish. Then I put that one design on a table runner, an area rug, and pillows, so the rooms stop arguing with each other.

Halloween people and Christmas people can fight about the name. We call it Gothmas. It runs from October straight through New Year’s and never once asks you to pick a side.

Start with the table, because that’s where everyone ends up standing

If you buy one piece, buy the Gothmas table runner. It wins, and it isn’t close.

It’s 16 by 72 inches of polyester for $50.75, which means it covers a six-foot dining table end to end with drop to spare. Mine went down before anything else. Runner first. Then the plates, then the glasses, then two candles I already owned and a bowl of whatever fruit was in the kitchen. Set in the order a person actually sets a table, the plum ground does the work that a whole bin of seasonal clutter used to do. The medallions read as wreaths from across the room and as moons-and-stars quilling up close, and that double read is the entire trick. Your Halloween people see their holiday. Your Christmas people see theirs. Nobody has to be told the theme because there isn’t an argument to have.

This is the runner that stays out for the late-October dinner, for Thanksgiving, for the December party where someone always ends up standing in the kitchen holding a plate. One purchase, three occasions, zero bins in between.

The floor, where I got it wrong before I got it right

Full honesty: I ordered the small rug first.

24 by 36 inches, for a hallway that clearly needed the long one. It looked like a postage stamp with good intentions. Measure your space before you order, because I did not, and my eyes paid for it. The Gothmas area rug comes in 7 sizes, from that same 24 by 36 all the way up to 108 by 144 inches, starting at $63.78. The one you actually want for an entry or hall is the 30 by 96 hall runner. It runs the length of the walkway, it puts the same medallions under your feet that are sitting on your table, and a guest walking in sees one house with one idea instead of three rooms doing separate holidays.

Under a dining table, size up until the front legs of your chairs sit on it. All on or all off. Half-on is where rugs go to look accidental.

The couch is where the color fight happens

The throw pillows are the medallions, solo, one big quilling-look medallion per pillow, in green, red, or blue. Five sizes, 16 to 26 inches, from $58.74 each.

Pick a side, because you have to:

  • The green reads Christmas the loudest, especially against a dark couch.
  • The red is the bridge. October or December, it never looks out of season.
  • The blue is my pick, and I’ll defend it: it’s the only one that still looks right in January, when the tree is gone and you want the room to keep some of its nerve.

Then there’s the big one. The Gothmas body pillow is 20 by 54 inches of microfiber with the whole panorama running across it, all the medallions in a row, for $130.81. Across the foot of a bed or along the back of a deep couch, it is a lot of Gothmas in one object. That’s not a warning. That’s the review.

The whole point, in one sentence

One design. Table, floor, couch. You decorate once in October and you stop apologizing for it until January.

Start with the table.
